New England DP Roger Woodruff recently did a shoot in Boston with WebMD! Featuring a brief interview with a scientist who is leveraging AI to predict breast cancer, Roger was riding solo as a one-man-band (OMB) setup.
For the shoot, he utilized an FX9 with a 40mm lens and an FX3 with an 85mm lens, shooting in S-Cinetone at 23.98 fps, 4K resolution, ISO 320, and a white balance of 5500K. With only 90 minutes to set up—including load-in time— Roggg arrived at the parking lot by 7:50 AM and was ready to roll cameras by 9:30 AM. Pushing a cart about a quarter mile across MIT’s campus, the effort was commendable and surely something that, according to Roggg, his apprentice would be very proud of!
The lighting setup included a key light using a 720b with a 120par softbox, a fill light with a 60b with a 60par softbox, an edgelight with a 60b with diffusion, and 1/4 CTB (as per the producer’s request), along with a 300w fresnel for the background. The location itself was in a building that, “seemed straight out of a Dr. Seuss book,” which added an interesting visual element to the shoot.
“It was a solid day,” says Roggg. “The producer was happy. Sometimes it’s nice to do a OMB. It keeps you in check. It keeps you humble.”
