A Toronto Interview for CNN

A Toronto Interview for CNN

TL;DR

A single 500 through full and half silk, a white wall doing the fill work, and two half-opened curtains letting an overcast Toronto sky put texture on the background. DP Hayden shot the interview on an FX9 and FX3 with G Master primes.

Hayden Broomhead shot a interview for CNN with Timothy Synder. Camera was an FX9 as the primary with an FX3 as the secondary. Glass came from Sony's G Master prime line, the 50mm and the 85mm. Two focal lengths on two bodies is a clean way to cover a sit-down: a wider, more contextual frame that shows some of the room and the curtained background, and a tighter second angle for cutaways and reaction beats. Primes also pair well with a single soft key, since the falloff and the bokeh do a lot of the separation work that a hair light would otherwise be asked to do.

Quick 3 hour interview. Footage went out by FTP after wrap, so the production team had access to the files without waiting on a drive to travel. Setup was quick and easy! One light, one silk stack, a white wall, two curtains and two primes. The restraint was the point: the room was already doing half the work, and the crew's job was to notice that before hanging anything else.
