HOW WE CHOOSE CREW
Assignment Desk uses a transparent, explainable crew selection process based on coordinator relationships, crew ratings, profile quality, and client preferences. Every crew member can see exactly why they were or weren't selected.
Most crewing platforms treat their algorithms like trade secrets. We think that's backwards. If your livelihood depends on how you're ranked, you deserve to know exactly how the ranking works. No hidden factors. No opaque AI. Just straightforward, explainable math.
How Crew Are Selected
When a shoot comes in, our coordinators evaluate available crew using four factors — in this order of priority. The process is the same for every single gig.
Coordinator Relationship
Our coordinators know who delivers. Crew members with proven working history and strong professional relationships get first consideration — because trust is earned on set, not on a profile page.
Crew Ratings
Every shoot generates a 1-5 star rating from the coordinator. These ratings are Bayesian-smoothed so new crew aren't penalized, and experienced crew aren't inflated by a single great review.
Profile Quality
Complete profiles rank higher. That means a professional headshot, detailed bio, portfolio samples, equipment list, and an active subscription tier. We reward crew who invest in their presence on the platform.
Client Request
Sometimes a client specifically asks for a crew member they've worked with before. When that happens, client preference takes priority — it's their project and their creative vision.
How the Directory Algorithm Works
Every crew member on Assignment Desk receives a master rating score that determines their position in search results and directory listings. Here is exactly how it works.
Staff Crew
200,000

Our full-time W-2 Directors of Photography. Trained through our Federally Accredited Apprenticeship program, equipped with company gear, and embedded in their markets. They start with the highest base score because they represent the deepest level of commitment to the Assignment Desk standard.
Paid Subscribers
50,000
base score
Enhanced and Elite tier freelancers who invest in their profiles with a paid subscription. They get a significant base score boost plus all the freelancer scoring factors below. The subscription signals professional commitment and unlocks premium visibility.
Free Members
0
base score
Basic tier members start at zero base score but can still rank well through the freelancer scoring factors. Great ratings, completed shoots, and a polished profile all contribute. Free members prove themselves through their work — and many rise quickly.
What Builds Your Score
On top of the base tier score, every crew member earns points from these factors. The same formula applies to all tiers.

We publish this algorithm because we believe crew deserve to know how they're ranked. No hidden factors. No opaque AI. Just straightforward, explainable math. If you think the formula should change, tell us — we're listening.
Your Dashboard Shows Everything
Every crew member gets a personal dashboard with full visibility into their performance, ranking, and selection history. No surprises. No black boxes.
Booking Insights
See your booking rate, response time, and how you compare to platform averages. Your dashboard shows exactly where you stand — no guessing, no hidden metrics.
Selection Reasons
When someone else gets the gig, see exactly why — coordinator history, ratings, profile completeness, or client request. Category-level explanations, never the identity of the selected crew.
Improvement Tips
Get personalized recommendations based on your actual data — not generic advice. If your profile is missing a portfolio, we tell you. If your response time is slow, we show you the numbers.
Privacy Commitment
Transparency has guardrails. When we show you why someone else got the gig, we provide category-level reasons (e.g., "coordinator history" or "higher rating") — we never reveal the identity of the selected crew member. Selection reasons require a minimum of 3 applicants to prevent identification by elimination. Your personal performance data is visible only to you and the coordinators who work with you.
Our Numbers, In Real Time
These numbers are pulled live from our database — not marketing estimates. What you see is what we actually do.
Built for Compliance
Algorithmic transparency isn't just the right thing to do — it's increasingly the law. Here's how Assignment Desk meets and exceeds current regulations.
NYC Local Law 144
Algorithmic Hiring Transparency
Requires bias audits and public notices for automated employment decision tools. We go further — we publish the entire algorithm.
California SB 1162
Pay Transparency
Mandates pay scale disclosure in job postings. Our rate cards and pay ranges are visible to every crew member before they accept a gig.
Colorado AI Act (2026)
High-Risk AI Systems
Requires transparency for AI systems used in consequential decisions. Our crew selection is rule-based and fully explainable — no black-box AI.
CCPA / CPRA
Data Privacy Rights
Gives crew the right to access, delete, and opt out of data sharing. Every crew member can export their full data profile at any time.
We don't just comply — we exceed requirements by publishing our algorithm and giving crew full access to their data.
