Standing in the heart of Buffalo, NY, with an Arri Alexa Mini in hand and a massive 20x30 foot green screen stretched behind me, I knew this ESPN production was going to be something special. As the Director of Photography for this multi-day Buffalo video production, I was about to help create the visual foundation for Bills coverage that would reach millions of fans.
ESPN had commissioned Assignment Desk to establish a state-of-the-art green screen set specifically for Buffalo Bills content. Working alongside producer Ryan Charles, our mission was clear: build a broadcast-quality environment that could seamlessly integrate talent with any digital background ESPN's post-production team could imagine. This wasn't just another corporate video shoot — this was network television production at its finest.
The technical approach demanded precision and power. The Arri Alexa Mini was the perfect choice for this Buffalo video production, offering the dynamic range and color science ESPN requires for broadcast standards. But the real magic happened in the lighting design. We deployed an arsenal of LED fixtures: multiple 300-watt units for fill light, powerful 720-watt lights for key lighting, and versatile 600D fixtures to eliminate green screen shadows. Each light was carefully positioned and modified with softboxes to create that coveted even illumination across the entire 20x30 foot backdrop. The 19-inch monitor and DIT laptop allowed for real-time color grading and exposure monitoring, ensuring every frame met ESPN's exacting standards.

The 17-120mm zoom lens gave us incredible versatility for different shot sizes, while extra media cards ensured we'd never miss a moment.
Shoot day arrived with a 7 AM call time, and the energy was electric. For eleven hours, we captured content that showcased the green screen's capabilities. Every setup required precise communication between camera operator, lighting team, and talent. The Alexa Mini's exceptional low-light performance allowed us to maintain broadcast quality even during complex lighting transitions, while the comprehensive gear package — including backup lights and additional softboxes — kept us prepared for any creative request.
