About Zolani

Zolani Balekwa is a South African filmmaker, producer, writer and project practitioner based in Cape Town, with a growing body of work across film, documentary storytelling, arts and culture, community development and creative production. His experience has allowed him to work across both creative and practical sides of production, giving him an understanding of what is required to take a project from an idea through to execution on the ground. Zolani has received training through the Documentary Institute of South Africa, UCT and Shoot97 Films, and has been involved in a range of documentary and film projects as a filmmaker and creative practitioner. His work has particularly focused on people, communities, social issues and stories emerging from township and grassroots environments. Beyond filmmaking, Zolani has developed strong experience in project coordination, event planning, community engagement, research, reporting and working with different stakeholders. He is comfortable operating in environments where communication, organisation, problem-solving and reliability are essential. Zolani is also developing a specialised focus in film production logistics and on-location support. This includes working as a Production Runner, Lock-Up PA, production assistant and logistics support, as well as assisting productions with township location scouting, local community liaison and location coordination. Having a strong familiarity with township environments gives him an ability to help productions navigate locations and communities respectfully and practically. He is particularly interested in working alongside established production companies and learning from experienced crews while contributing his own knowledge, energy and production experience. Zolani understands the importance of punctuality, professionalism, confidentiality, teamwork and being able to respond quickly to the changing demands of a production day. His long-term goal is to build a professional film logistics and production-support operation that can provide reliable runners, lock-up teams, local location support and township production services to film, television, commercial and media productions working across Cape Town and the Eastern Cape. Zolani brings together creative filmmaking experience, grassroots community knowledge and practical project-management skills, making him a versatile addition to production teams looking for someone who understands both the creative environment and the realities of working on location.
