Transforming an Airbnb into Magic: First Look TV Production in Katy, TX
When I got the call from producer Chip Shelby about a First Look TV production in Katy, TX, I knew we were in for something special. As a Director of Photography, I've learned that every location tells a story — but sometimes you have to coax that story out of the most unexpected places.
The assignment was clear: capture compelling content for First Look TV's latest project, working within the intimate confines of an Airbnb rental. What makes this type of video production challenging isn't just the technical aspects — it's the creative problem-solving required to transform a generic space into something that serves the narrative. Our Katy video production team had six hours to make magic happen, from a 10 AM call time to 4 PM wrap.
For this corporate video production, I chose the Sony FX9 as our primary workhorse, paired with the more compact FX3 for versatility. The FX9's full-frame sensor and exceptional low-light performance would be crucial in the Airbnb's mixed lighting conditions, while the FX3 gave us the mobility to capture intimate moments without disrupting the natural flow. I also brought along my laptop and streaming kit — modern video production often requires real-time collaboration and immediate feedback loops.
The real challenge emerged once we stepped into the space. Generic Airbnb properties are designed to be inoffensive and broadly appealing, which is exactly the opposite of what compelling video content requires. Working closely with the director and referencing our carefully crafted look book, we began the process of visual storytelling through lighting design and camera placement. Every angle needed to feel intentional, every shadow purposeful. The key was finding ways to use the existing architecture and natural light sources to create depth and mood that aligned with First Look TV's vision.
What I love most about working with Assignment Desk's network is the collaborative spirit that emerges on every shoot. Our Katy video production crew moved like a well-oiled machine, each team member understanding their role in the larger creative vision. The director and I maintained constant communication about framing and movement, while the technical crew ensured our streaming capabilities kept the client connected to the action in real-time. It's this kind of seamless teamwork that turns good video production into exceptional content.
After six hours of intensive filming, we delivered the footage via FTP, ensuring First Look TV had immediate access to review and begin their post-production workflow. The transformation we achieved — turning that neutral Airbnb space into a compelling visual narrative — exemplifies what professional video production can accomplish with the right combination of technical expertise and creative vision.
Every location presents its own unique challenges, but that's what makes this work endlessly rewarding. Whether it's a corporate headquarters or a rental property in Katy, TX, the magic happens when skilled camera crews collaborate to tell stories that matter. This First Look TV production reminded me why I became a Director of Photography — it's about finding the extraordinary in the ordinary, one frame at a time.
