“I don’t always get to shoot in Vermont, but when I do, it’s usually a fun and picturesque shoot,” says New England DP Roger Woodruff. On a recent shoot for ABC’s Good Morning America, Roger and his apprentice, Ethan, spent the day in Stowe, VT, filming a segment at the von Trapp Family Lodge for the recurring GMA feature, “America the Beautiful.”

The day began with an interview with Kristina von Trapp Frame, one of the owners of the lodge. A fun fact about Kristina: she is a direct descendant of the von Trapp children made famous in the classic film, The Sound of Music.

Following the interview, Roger and Ethan were given a tour of the lodge and its extensive property, which includes a brewery, chapel, garden, sugar house, and more.  “Everywhere you turn, there was a great shot to get,” said Roger.

Roger shot the entire day on his Sony FX9, using the 28–135mm lens for flexibility in the fast-paced, “run and gun” situation. For early morning beauty shots of the mountains and low-lying clouds, he switched briefly to the 100–400mm. It was a memorable day on set, and both Roger and Ethan enjoyed the experience — a successful shoot in a beautiful setting!
