How to Choose the Best Location for Filming | Assignment Desk – Blog | With your next shoot around the corner, have you prepared what locations you’ll be using? Finding the perfect spots for filming isn’t always easy, and that’s why we’re here to help! Keep reading to find a few tips on how to choose the best location for your next shoot!

Use of Natural Light

While we know this isn’t always possible, but it is the most ideal way to light a shoot. It is much easier to compliment light that already exists rather than completely building it from scratch. If your scene is an exterior shot, it will be easy to plan your filming around the time of day where lighting is best. However, for an interior shot, this is more difficult. So make sure to stage your shots near the exterior windows.

Make sure you get the right permits

Doing the proper research before a shoot is key in this step. If you’re filming at someones house or a private property, it may be a simple as gaining the owners approval. However, in most cities, you’ll need a permit if you are capturing a shot in the action of downtown. Making sure that your crew and talent are a safe as possible is the most important thing.

Distance is important

If you have multiple locations to film at,  making sure that they’re not too far apart is a major step in the process. This way, if you’re on a time constraint, you won’t have to worry about getting from point A to point B in a hurry. This will ensure that your equipment and your crews stay as safe as possible.

Prepare for Inclement Weather

Another step in the process that relies heavily on research and planning. A stormy day can annihilate any chance of capturing a shot if bad weather isn’t in the script. While you can’t change the weather, you can prepare for it. Constantly check the weather forecast and make any necessary changes to your filming schedule.

Check Your Budget

While some outdoor shooting is completely free, there may be other factors that add to your budget. If you end up needing to dress up the filming location, add into your budget additional equipment. This could include anything from extra lighting, more cameras, or even a stage to dress up the set.

Watch out for background noise

Nothing can ruin a video more than lots of background noise interfering with what’s important. When choosing a shoot location, be sure to choose somewhere at quiet as possible. This may require some pre-planning so that you avoid areas of heavy construction or bad traffic spots.
